communications and publicity committee
The Communications and Publicity Committee’s role is to connect and engage chapter members by producing a chapter newsletter. The newsletter is a vital part of keeping members connected not only on the chapter level but also on the area, state, and international levels. Key information is shared by the Chapter Editor. A secondary role for this committee is to recognize chapter newsletters which have achieved Five-Star Status and to present Member-in-Print Awards to members for publications they have made including books, articles, essays, short stories, blogs, and poetry. The committee also awards Media Recognition Awards to outstanding newspapers for their overall coverage of educational news and of local chapter news.
Connect and Celebrate
There are many ways to celebrate your DKG chapter and sisters. One idea is to list monthly birthdays in your newsletter. Most people enjoy having their birthday celebrated and it helps the rest of us remember them.
Another idea is to have a section of the newsletter devoted to recognition of your DKG members. Things like awards, new certifications, educational advancements, promotions, publications, retirement, teacher of the year, and any other recognition should be mentioned in the newsletter. If possible, include pictures of the event.
Do not forget to celebrate your chapter achievements. Publicize special activities you are doing, grants you receive, honors that are presented to the chapter, and recognize unique events and milestone birthdays. If you live in a small town (many larger towns do not usually publish) make certain that you submit these items and pictures for publication in the local newspaper.
No matter how large your town is a good way to connect and celebrate your members and chapter is to make certain that you highlight your achievements on social media platforms. Does your chapter have a Facebook page? A website? Etc.? Consider using these as this is a quick way to reach many as we are all connected to our phones.

Does My Chapter Need a Newsletter?
The resounding answer is, “YES!” Newsletters are vital to all chapters and their members. The purpose of a newsletter is to inform, educate, connect, celebrate, publicize, and engage members. Newsletters bridge the gap between all levels of the Society. Newsletters should be the “place to go” for all key information.

Who gets my newsletter?
Of course, ALL members of your chapter should receive a newsletter. Many chapters choose to send their newsletters electronically thus saving time and money. But don’t forget about any member who cannot receive electronic copies. Reach out to them by using postal mail. This should include those who are unable to attend a meeting in person. Another idea is to send to those who recently dropped their membership. This is a way to keep them informed and it keeps the chance of them returning open.
But members are not the only ones. An electronic pdf copy of your newsletter should be sent to the following in a timely manner. State President Dr. Stacey Arnold, your Area Mentor, Connie Hernandez Editor of the Lone Star News, Dr. Barbara Derrick Chairman of the TSO Communications and Publicity Committee, your Area Coordinator, and the Communications and Publicity Committee Member assigned to your area. Contact Information, including email addresses, can be found in the Presidents’ Kit. Your Chapter President can share the required password with you or contact Dr. Derrick. Also, please use the subject line below when sending newsletters. The subject line for all newsletters should be: Chapter Name, Area, Month published.
