Dr. Betty Iles and the Lumberton Historical Museum

Dr. Betty Iles has long been an active member of Mu Upsilon Chapter of Area 2. Inducted in 1967, Betty has served on various committees and frequently shared programs for teaching and art, often speaking at chapter meetings of her love for DKG, which awarded her the scholarship needed to obtain her doctorate degree.
In recent years Betty began dreaming of having an historical museum in the town where she has lived for many years. When she joined with like-minded citizens, the planning and fundraising began. While the museum was still in the planning stages in 2024, Betty recruited Mu Upsilon members to become dues-paying Museum members. Then at a chapter meeting in 2025, she shared a presentation on the museum’s progress, including drawings of the planned exhibits. The dream came to fruition on August 6, 2026, as the Lumberton Historical Museum held its grand opening. At 99, Betty has only recently retired from driving and moved to an assisted living apartment in nearby Beaumont. Although her DKG membership has shifted to reserve status, members are already placing bets that she will remain the most active reserve member in the chapter’s history. Sherry Burnett, Superintendent's Leadership award winner

Lambda (Area 8, Temple/Belton) sister Sherry Burnett was honored at the Temple ISD Board meeting on July 13 with the Superintendent’s Leadership Award. For the past three years, Sherry has served as head librarian at Temple High School and district library coordinator for the district. During these years of service, she received several Temple Education Foundation grants to fund a variety of projects, including author visits, reading competitions, and writing activities to encourage students to envision their potential as writers, readers, and innovators. One of her projects, “Voices of Temple,” created a student anthology to publish creative works by students in grades 3-12. She has also hosted district-wide literacy events to bring parents and students together in a love for reading. These have included read-aloud times by the librarians, book-themed activities, and even a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog. She has also organized summer reading challenges around themed reading that rewards students for their summer reading with pool passes, books, and other summer-fun items. Through her collaboration with the Temple Public Library, she has helped publicize library resources and enabled students to get library cards. Superintendent Bobby Ott recognized her as having energized interest in reading and significantly increasing student book checkouts, and he credits her leadership for helping students grow and become lifelong learners.
Sherry has been a Lambda member for the last two years and is currently serving as 2nd Vice President and newsletter editor for the chapter. |
